Leveling Up in Uptown

Some jobs come with unique challenges, and The Westin Charlotte renovation in Uptown was no exception. The main challenge? The first-floor subfloor was a wood-over-sleeper system that was more than ½ inch out of level in just two feet. That kind of unevenness isn’t just a cosmetic problem—it impacts every trade that follows, especially flooring installation.

A Game Plan for Success

To create a stable, level surface, we started by applying an acrylic sealer, setting leveling pins, and pouring Maxxon High Performance to bring everything back into alignment. But getting the job done required teamwork and problem-solving.

The tight construction schedule meant other trades needed access quickly. We collaborated across the jobsite to ensure the floor had the best conditions for fast, even drying—running dehumidifiers, delaying lift use, and protecting the surface with foam board and plywood. Because of our extra care, the floor dried fast, and flooring installation stayed right on schedule.

Working in the Heart of the City

The location added another layer of complexity. With a single-lane road closure in a busy four-lane corridor, we got creative with material handling. Despite being blocked off, commuters were constantly walking through our setup, and maneuvering a skid steer around trees, fire hydrants, and pedestrian walkways required precision. Despite the obstacles, our team worked safely—delivering a level, high-quality surface while keeping the project on track.

Got a tough job with tight deadlines or tricky site conditions? We’re ready to take it on. Let’s talk about how Kent Underlayments can bring the same smart planning, teamwork, and hustle to your next project.
